Bulgaria Sat, Bulgaria’s sole satellite operator and the country’s space industry innovator, has been awarded ‘Newcomer Satellite Operator of the Year’ for 2017.

The award was presented during the 14th Annual Awards for Excellence in Satellite Communications as part of the main event for World Satellite Business Week 2017. The ceremony was held on 13 September in Paris, France.

Maxim Zayakov, CEO of Bulgaria Sat, said: “This award is a great honour for Bulgaria and Bulgaria Sat. We pioneered with BulgariaSat-1 project ten years ago and today we are proud to step up as a part of the European satellite operators family.

“BulgariaSat-1 opens the path for the development of the Bulgarian space and satellite industry, expanding the nation’s reach and reinforcing our position as a satellite operator in central and eastern Europe, fuelling our regional growth.”

The Annual Awards for Excellence in Satellite Communications recognised Bulgaria Sat, alongside its management, for an outstanding accomplishment in the satellite sector, whilst praising the company’s efforts and hard work.

The winner was chosen by a panel of industry experts from Euroconsult, SpaceNews, and SatelliteFinance who assess candidates using extensive qualitative and quantitative criteria.

BulgariaSat-1 will provide direct-to-home television (DTH) and data communications services on the Balkans, alongside other European regions. It is suitable for 4G LTE networks at 1800MHz.

BulgariaSat-1 can also be used in the event of accidents due to natural disasters, whereby land-based networks are not operational.
