AR app assists Manchester Pride visitors29/08/17Culture
Those visiting the Manchester Pride celebrations over the UK Bank Holiday weekend from 25-28 August could take advantage of an augmented reality (AR) app to view hidden information and images around the city.
The ‘Buzzin’ app was part of the city’s smart city project, CityVerve, and helped to fulfil one of the demonstrator site’s aims to provide citizens with tailored information about their journey and surroundings. The project worked with AR, data analysis and smart city specialist Sparta Digital to create it.
The app functioned with posters located around the city and in ‘The Village’. Users pointed their phones at the posters and the exclusive information would appear, which included a map of the event, full line-up and a clue which led people to the so-called ‘secret silent disco’.
The second main feature consisted of bespoke ‘points of interest’ made especially for the festival, guiding users to where all the amenities were: wristband exchange points, stages, VIP tent, food and drink, toilets, markets, aid, exits and entrances and many more.
Ashraf Anwar, Sparta’s senior developer, said: “We’re constantly testing and trying this new technology for different projects, such as CityVerve which is the UK’s smart city demonstrator.
“AR is the current trend, and it’s a wonderful tool to work with and really gets people excited based on the amazing responses that we have received from our work so far. There are still other features that we have yet to explore, so it’s an exciting time ahead of us.”
